The 5th Wall

You spent weeks looking over paint chips, doing google searches, and flipping through decorating magazines to find the perfect color for your walls. Then, without giving it much thought at all, you paint the ceiling boring old white. Sound familiar?
We've got nothing against white paint! We actually LOVE white! We just don't think it has to be the only choice in ceiling color. We found some great ideas for painting your ceilings a variety of colors, from the soft light blue above to the daring bright red below.

Love purple but not enough to have it dominate the whole room? Paint the ceiling  in this bright hue and it naturally draws your eyes up. Guaranteed to get oohs and ahs from anyone who enters your home.

This gray ceiling with neutral toned walls makes for a warm and inviting space.

The gold and blue scheme is bold and stylish, the perfect setting for dinners to remember.

This rich green is a great color for these vaulted ceilings. The light reflects off of it and makes the whole room shine.

This room is clean and crisp and the neutral toned ceiling adds depth and sophistication.

White walls with a dark floor and gray ceiling give this kitchen a simple and modern feel.

Think neutral colors are boring? Think again! We love this warm and inviting dining room.
For your next painting project, consider painting the ceiling a darker color than the walls. You'll be impressed with how much this 5th wall can add to your decor.

Winter Solstice

"Resembling early evening shadows on freshly fallen snow, this light, cool gray inspires thoughts of slipping into a warm wool sweater on a chilly night."

A perfect color for any room, Winter Solstice shines in this living room with green accents.

Winter Solstice is just the right shade of gray for this classic dining room. The dark wood furniture and the creamy carpet and chair covers are the perfect compliment.
We love this pop of color! What a great idea to use the neutral Winter Solstice as a backdrop and the Caribbean Blue Water on the back of the shelving.
Benjamin Moore has so many shades of gray to choose from... well over the 50 you keep hearing about. Why not consider one of them for a room in your house?

cAPPture some color

It seems that every other day one of my kids is telling me about some APP for my IPhone that I absolutely must have. They usually involve racing motorcycles or killing zombies... not really my thing, but I appreciate the thought. Today, I found an App that I can really get into. It's called Color CAPPture and IT IS AWESOME!!!
With this free app you can snap a picture of anything that inspires you, whether it's a flower garden or an ape at the zoo, and all you have to do is tap the picture to find out the Benjamin Moore paint that will match that particular color.

Could this be any cooler?! I've been snapping pictures all around the store and office and I am having so much fun. Think of the possibilities... sunrise, sunset, maybe even the color of a wall in a public place or some one's house that you visit, the beach, a sweater... you can literally get a color read on ANYTHING!

He he... I did say anything!

Another cool feature is the "retail locator" button in the lower right hand corner. No need to wonder where you can find Benjamin Moore's superior products, just tap and you will know! Of course, if you're in Central Massachusetts, the place to get your Benjamin Moore paint is always Economy Paint Supply. Come on down and see us and we'll make sure you get the best customer service out there. Don't wander the big box stores trying to figure out what kind of paint, what type of finish, and how much you'll need for your space. Our knowledgeable and friendly staff will walk you through the whole process and make sure you're getting the right products for your project.
So, go ahead and check it out! I downloaded the app right from my phone, but you can get the app from the Benjamin Moore site as well.

Color of the Week 12/15

Benjamin Moore's Candy Cane Red evokes warm feelings of Santa Claus, sweet treats, and family gatherings. Of course, this versatile red isn't just for December and Christmastime, but it sure does make a fine backdrop for a dining room decked for the holidays.

Who wouldn't be proud to invite guests into this beautiful dining room for a holiday feast? This room is bright and festive, rich and classy.

How about a bold red ceiling to top off and otherwise neutral room? This high ceiling painted bold red really makes the room. It's that little bit of added whimsy that you wouldn't expect, but that adds a richness that no white ceiling could ever come close to. Ceilings are now being referred to as the "5th wall"  and should not be ignored when decorating your home.

Another great use for red is as an accent wall. A lot of people are nervous about committing to a whole red room, but the accent wall is a fantastic option. You get that bold pop of color and it doesn't overpower the entire room.

Have an old desk or table that could use some refreshing? Why not go bold with red?! This flea market find is transformed into a bold conversation piece perfect for an entry or any other spot in the home that could use a little punch of bold color.

Paint an old mirror in bright red and it has a whole new life!
Red is a great color with so much versatility. It can be just the thing to completely change the look and feel of a room. Red pairs well with white, chocolate brown, or gray and fits into almost any decor style. Will it fit into yours?

We're in the Navy now

Benjamin Moore's Hale Navy from the Historic Collection

Benjamin Moore has several shades of navy to choose from. The one that really seems to have the most depth and versatility is Hale Navy. This color is a good fit for any room in the house. Pairing it with white gives it a classic look, while darker tones can really create a cozier look.
The bathroom above uses dark wood and white trim to create a classic clean look. The room has a masculine feel yet doesn't say "boys only".

The contrast of the dark blue and white above is also a classic look, but with a more feminine feel to it.

Hale Navy is the prefect backdrop to showcase a collection of gilded mirrors. Gold and Navy are a natural mix.

With lots of light and white linens, this dark, soulful color creates a scene of crisp comfort.
The wood floors and colorful rug really bring Hale Navy to life!

Color of the week 12/8

This week's color of the week is Benjamin Moore's Deep Poinsettia.
I love the richness of this color and I think it would be great for almost any room in the house. Afraid of such a deep color? Don't be! Reds can be a great addition to your color scheme! Check out the ideas Benjamin Moore has for red. I bet you thought you couldn't do red in a small room! Well, you can do red in ANY size or style room.

I love love love this dining room. This room has an accent wall painted in Deep Poinsettia and it looks so cozy and comfortable, just what you would want in your dining room. The other walls are a muted yellow, making the red POP!
Don't forget! Chalkboard paint can now be mixed in ANY color... love this table!

Another great project using a deep shade to accent the back of a shelving unit. It really makes those gorgeous vases stand out and gives the wood finish a certain richness.

POP! of color shelf ideas

A great way to spruce up a room and add that "pop of color" is to paint the backing of a bookshelf. It doesn't take much paint, it's a quick and easy project (depending, of course, on how much stuff you have on those shelves to begin with), and it will create instant visual interest. Having that gorgeous color there will also give you incentive to thin out the possessions you keep on these shelves, as you'll want to show off as much of that color as possible!
I didn't have to go far to find some great examples of this idea. I even found some designs that made me think of all of the possibilities once you add wallpaper to the mix. Oh... the endless ways this technique can be used!
This display shines with a pretty lavender in the background. Just look at how the background shines a light on those golden frames! Talk about making an impact full display!

This green really pops while at the same time sets a very calming and warm feel for kitchen shelving. These kitchen basics really shine here and get the attention they would never get behind closed cabinet doors. The framed chalkboard above is the perfect addition to this display of kitchen goodness!

This one really got me thinking... you could do a stencil design with paint, or you could use wallpaper! There is literally a wallpaper design out there for every style and budget. I know this, because I have spent a good deal of my time in the Economy Paint stores flipping through wallpaper books and photographing these amazing wall coverings. I honestly had no idea there would be so many to love!

Here is a great example of open cabinetry in a kitchen made fabulous. This lovely light color gives the space a sweet little pop of color without taking away the neutrality of the color scheme. Brilliant!

Last, and certainly not least, think of the flea market finds and hand me downs that can be inexpensively transformed with this technique! I found this piece at Rearranged Design. She used Benjamin Moore's Burnt Caramel and it looks amazing!

I hope these ideas will spark some ideas for you and your house/furniture. I know I have some plans for my wall of bookshelves. I'm thinking turquoise... or red...or green... I'm thinking I need more shelving, STAT!
Please comment and share any projects like this that you have done! We'd love to see your "pop of color" and share it with the rest of the idea hungry paint enthusiasts out there! (you can email photos to kerryk@economypaintsupply.com)
